The codes most often change, usually every year, and hence they have to update their knowledge of codes. If a biller puts an outdated code the bill is immediately rejected.

When we say medical billing codes, we refer to different types of medical codes such as HCPCS codes, CPT codes, and ICD 9 codes. All these codes help the physicians and medical billers to claim money against the service rendered to the insurers. Let's have a look at the types of codes.

Current Procedural Terminology or CPT codes are the codes of services and procedures that have been performed by physicians. The books or sources of CPT codes list all the procedural codes with explanation of each of them. You can search for them alphabetically or numerically. The CPT codes are updated every year and it's necessary that you remain aware of the changes.

The International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification or simply ICD9 codes are international classification of medical diagnoses. The ICD codes in books are listed both numerically and alphabetically. These codes are also updated annually. If you use outdated codes the claims will be denied without a second thought.

Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System or HCPCS codes are used to mention the products, services and supplies that have been provided to the patients while in hospital or clinic. These are not included in CPT codes. These codes cover services like ambulance, prosthetics, medical equipment, orthotics and alike. They too are updated annually.

A professional medical biller must know all these medical codes properly. The medical codes simplify the service of reporting and payment. The insurance companies need to verify the codes and see that they cover the appropriate amount of insurance. Without them no medical claims will be passed by the insurance companies. If a medical biller has no adequate knowledge of medical codes he cannot make correct bills.
